GST-Inclusive Activewear Pricing — Why Some Brands Hide the 18% Tax
·
SheSnake Studio

You're shopping for activewear in India. You see a pair of leggings listed at ₹2,500. You add it to cart. At checkout the total reads ₹2,950. You scroll up. There it is: +₹450 estimated GST. Your "₹2,500 leggings" just became ₹2,950 leggings.

You're not imagining it, and it's not illegal. It's how Indian e-commerce GST works. But it's also the thing that breaks more Indian carts than any other single factor — Razorpay's own data shows tax-on-top adds 11–14% drop-off at the checkout step.

Here's how SheSnake handles it, why we made the choice, and what to look for at every Indian activewear brand.

How Indian e-commerce GST actually works

The Indian GST regime levies 18% on apparel priced above ₹1,000 per piece. (Apparel below ₹1,000 attracts 5%.) The 18% is a destination-based tax — the seller collects it from the buyer and remits it to the government.

The seller has two choices for how to display the price:

  1. Tax-exclusive — show ₹2,500, add ₹450 at checkout, customer pays ₹2,950. Seller nets ₹2,500.
  2. Tax-inclusive — show ₹2,950, customer pays ₹2,950. Seller nets ₹2,500. (Same net for the seller; different perception for the buyer.)

Mathematically identical from the seller's bank account. Psychologically very different at the customer's checkout.

Which one is "honest"?

Both are legal. Both are GST-compliant. Both produce the same tax invoice.

But — and this is the part most brands won't admit publicly — tax-exclusive pricing exists because it lets brands display lower numbers in catalog and ad creative. ₹2,500 catches more clicks than ₹2,950, even if the customer eventually pays the same.

The Indian retail equivalent is the MRP. Every product sold offline in India shows an "MRP inclusive of all taxes" sticker. That's not a courtesy — it's a statutory requirement under the Legal Metrology Act. Online, the same convention is permitted but not enforced. So some brands take advantage of the loophole.

The cost to the customer

The cost isn't a different rupee total — it's a different experience:

  • Cart abandonment — Indian shoppers, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, abandon carts when they hit unexpected charges. Seeing tax added at the final step reads as deception, even when it isn't.
  • Pricing comparison breakdown — comparing brand A's "₹2,500" to brand B's "₹2,950" only makes sense if you know A is tax-exclusive and B is tax-inclusive. Most shoppers don't check.
  • Returns confusion — refunds against tax-exclusive prices have to recompute the GST portion, which complicates the customer's view of what they're getting back.

What SheSnake does

Every price on shesnake.com is inclusive of all taxes — 18% GST already built in. The number you see on the product page is the number you pay at checkout. There is no surprise tax line.

This is the same convention used by Indian apparel offline retail (MRP inclusive of taxes), by Myntra, by Nykaa Fashion, by Zara India, by H&M India. It's also what international shoppers expect from any modern e-commerce experience.

The trade-off is that we display higher numbers in catalog than a tax-exclusive competitor. We accept that — clarity at checkout is worth more than the click difference.

How to spot it before you buy

On any Indian activewear site:

  1. Add a single piece to cart.
  2. Click checkout.
  3. Look for an "Estimated taxes" or "GST" line above the total.
  4. If it's there with a non-zero amount, the brand is tax-exclusive.
  5. If the subtotal equals the total (or only shipping is added), the brand is tax-inclusive.

It takes 30 seconds. It's the single most useful filter you can apply to an unfamiliar Indian D2C brand.

Your invoice still shows GST

Tax-inclusive pricing doesn't mean GST disappears — it just means it's not a surprise. SheSnake invoices break out the GST portion (CGST/SGST or IGST depending on your state) for your records and for any business GST returns. The rupee total just doesn't change between "what you see" and "what you pay."

Compare like-for-like. ₹2,950 inclusive (us) and ₹2,500 exclusive (competitor) is the same price. Then compare fabric, fit, return policy, India-sizing, and brand pricing across colours.
